Fun Weight Loss Games

QuestionDid you ever think about what other fun way there is aside from our typical way to exercise? What fun weight loss games are there to help us shed some pounds? Of course, I can think of dancing. That is always fun, and you can shed some calories doing it for sure.

Here is one that you may not have thought of, playing video games. It may sound crazy, and I’m sure the first thing you are thinking is, how do I exercise and lose weight playing video games? Well, would it shock you to hear that you can do this?

The best thing about this is that you can do this with the entire family. I have done it and continue toVideo Games every time I have the chance. It combines dancing and playing, and you will move your whole body.

If you are a regular gamer, you probably know what I mean. Still, if you are not, then you should consider it, especially if you get bored easily when doing repetitive exercising routines or don’t have the motivation to exercise if it does not contain that fun element.

 The Games

I have enjoyed many a day of burning calories dancing to ‘Just Dance’. The game is available on all video game platforms – Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox.  It allows for multi-player so that you can play with more than one person. It usually allows up to four players.

music

The music tracks in the game are music and hits that we hear over the radio and tv, and many are by well-known artists. You play this game dancing in front of your tv set, similar to when you follow an exercise show on tv or an exercise video that you may play on your DVD player. Of course, you have to have one of the three video game consoles and the Just Dance game for that console to play it.

By following the dance moves of your chosen character, you will dance to the music, and the characters even interact during the dance routine, so if you are playing with someone else, you both interact with each other.

Another super fun video game that gets you moving and playing many traditional games is ‘Wii Sports’. The gameMario Nintendo has baseball, bowling, tennis, and even golf. Playing the games is a fun way to shed pounds, and you can include the entire family.  You move as if playing the games and must do it in front of the tv, so it keeps you active instead of sitting on a chair when playing.

My family and I own a few of the game systems, if not all. My favorite is Nintendo Wii U since it brings slim remote controls that connect the characters to the player. I got mine from Walmart and have purchased remote controls to replace old broken ones and different video games on eBay. (***When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Since then of course now there is the Nintendo Switch.  Luckily the game is also available for that game system. See video games and consoles specials at eBay.

How You Burn Calories

It’s straightforward and to the point how you burn calories. You dance, and you sweat. You sweat because you are moving, so your movements raise your heart rate the same way regular dancing exerts energy. So the same way you lose calories dancing, you lose them by dancing while playing this game.

How Many Calories are Burnt When Dancing?

According to healthadvisor.org, “half an hour of aerobic dancing may help you burn up to 620 calories.”

Calories

That is a ludicrous number of calories to lose in half an hour. I have walked on my treadmill and exercised on my bike for the same amount of time, and I have only seen on average that the calories burnt are roughly 100. So it goes to show that dancing is a very effective way to burn calories. And when you burn calories, you know you are losing weight.

Fun Ways to Exercise Is More Effective

According to PubMed, dancing is a way to adhere to physical activity. It is more likely to stick to an exercise routine if it incorporates fun than rigid traditional repetitious exercise. Harvard Health Publishing states that exergaming, a form of exercising through video games, can be a way to liven up exercise routines.

It is well known that we expend many calories when playing games where we physically move. A game of volleyball or  basketball, get our bodies moving. Ping pong, hockey, football, and so many others, get us moving and sweating.

We are in an era when the physical activity on the outside for many has decreased. A lot of it has been due to the pandemic. But, as I shared earlier, there are ways to get physically fit and lose weight in the process with video games.

Most Games that Involve Movement Are a Fun Way to Lose Weight

Hide and seek

As I shared before, most games that get you moving are a way to lose weight while having fun at the same time.  Traditional games on the outside are no exception.  There is tag, hide and seek, tug of war, hopscotch, capture the flag, traffic cop, hoola hoop, jump rope, double dutch, red light green light, spud, musical chairs, hey even leapfrog if you like.  They are all fun, and the best part, Jump rope you can play with the entire family.

  1. This is a very interesting concept that one can play video games and lose weight. Dancing is a great way to not only lose weight, but also stay fit, and of course it is a lot of fun. But yes, if you are moving your body, I can see how playing video games can help you to lose weight. Thanks for the suggestions on some fun games to use and the whole family can join in.

    1. Hello,

Thank you for your comment, and you are welcome.

I play video games since they first began hitting stores. I remember the brown console with the square controls and the joystick in the center. There were only a few games and the one I remember the most is tennis. It was just a line in the center of the tv screen and a smaller line bar on each side that served as the rackets. The ball was square, and moving the joystick up and down was how we hit the ball, which then traveled to the other side. Since then, we went to the Mario games and saw those develop into what we know today.

We never got to move too much while playing, and there was a lot of sitting around until the ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Wii Sports’ came out. It is truly a fun way to exercise.

For those who get bored easily with repetitive exercising, this is one of the best ways to add some excitement to exercising. I hope that if you decide to try it out, it brings you and your family lots of fun times and health.

I wish you all the best, Nyny

  2. Hello there! I really like the idea behind this article. These days, I have been trying to find ways to work out at home, but running in place, walking around the home, and other workouts started to get repetitive and a bit boring. Your idea of tying in games into working out is a very great idea. I think that is something that will keep me going when working out all while having fun. I haven’t personally tried dancing games yet but I’ll look more into it. Definitely sports and any moving games have been my focus over the years. Thanks for this.

    1. Hello, Mike,

Thank you for your comment. I am glad that my article is helpful to you—your welcome.

I think this is a great way to get us moving, especially during this time. I am hopeful others also thought about it as a way to exercise while indoors during this pandemic.

I will look into the games to see what others are out there to move while we play. When I find them, I will share them in my posts, so please do come back to learn of them as I update my site.

Till then, I wish you all the best, Nyny

  3. Losing weight for some are difficult due they do not want to do a basic repeat routine. Some need encouragement and that is where games come in. Glad you mentioned about just dance and the Nintendo Wii products. They are awesome to lose weight. Other games if you don’t have console, is outside games like ‘diskus’. Basically like rugby and netball rules in one game and you use a Frisbee instead of a ball. It is very competitive and fun game to play with a lot of friends.

    1. Hello, Bernard Breytenbach,

Thank you for your comment. It sounds like you have played the Wii games and have experienced losing weight by playing them. Thank you for sharing that with us. Through real stories, people understand they can lose weight, too, applying these habits to their routines.

Thank you for offering a different and traditional way to exercise and lose weight that doesn’t involve video games. Both methods are excellent and effective. If you remember others, please come back and share them with us.

  4. Sometime back I once saw on TV someone playing tennis (or was it squash) in front of a large screen. His movements somehow corresponded with the actions in the game on TV. I’m guessing this involved an extra gadget he’s holding in his hand as a racket. Must have some sensor of some sort. I was really amazed at this. It allows so much movement as the game progresses.

I believe these sort of games, including the dancing that you mention, enhances fitness while having fun at the same time.

    1. Hi, Steve,

The Wii games work as you described precisely. They have a remote control held in the player’s hand, and the sensor sits on the TV that senses the player’s movement. The character in the game then moves in sync with the action by the player. This is seen especially in the sports game. The dancing game is more the characters in the game moving and dancing, and the players have to follow their movement, and as they do, the game senses and gives the players points. The points then allow the players to open other game levels or beat their competitors if it’s a challenge dance.

I agree with you that this is a great way to enhance fitness. It is also an excellent way to lose weight. I am a testament to that.

If you ever get to play these types of games or something similar, please come back and share how you liked them. Until then, I wish you all the best.

  5. Such great advice to work out for fun and lose weight. I have had the Wii games for years and enjoy working out with them and I tried the dancing ones and it is so much fun. I actually videoed my line dancing class and now work out at home in between. It’s so much energy and I sing along as I dance. It has really helped me to lose weight and tone my body. Even better when I get some friends or family in to share the experience and fun.

    Great article thanks so much.

    1. Hi, Lily,

Thank you for your comment. It is always so lovely to hear of the experiences of others, in this case, you, when they share that they have tried the same or similar method to exercise, and it has worked for them. I am fond of real stories.

I like your idea to videotape your class and then use it to exercise. That is wonderful!

I am so glad to hear that what you are doing is working for you and is a fun way to exercise. I am sure it will help those who visit my site who are struggling to find a way to exercise while they have fun at the same time.

I hope you will come back and keep us updated on your progress.

I wish you all the best. Nyny
